Safety in the fast lane

During all V8 Supercar races a Safety Car will be positioned at the exit to pit lane. In the event of a serious incident the Race Director may send it out to control the field, while that incident is being attended to. As soon as the decision is made Yellow Flags and an "SC" sign will be displayed at all flag points.

Urgent

In an urgent situation the Safety Car will be sent out immediately to slow the field down. Once the entire field is in line the observer in the  Safety Car will wave cars past until the leader or appropriate car is directly behind the  Safety Car. The cars that have been waved past will make their way around the track, at a safe speed, until they have joined the rear of the queue. In the event that the leader has pitted or is not in his rightful position the next car that crossed the line behind him, be it second place man or a lapped car, will be deemed to be the appropriate car.

Not Urgent

If the Race Director decides that the situation doesn't require urgent action, the  Safety Car will make its way out of pit lane as the leader is passing the pits. He will immediately fall in behind the Safety Car and wall the rest of the competitors will line up behind him.

End of Safety Car Period

When the emergency is under control and conditions are acceptable for racing to resume, the Race Director will inform the Safety Car driver to turn off the lights on top of the Safety Car. This will happen anytime during a lap and will signal that the Safety Car will pull off at the end of the lap.

Racing will recommence at the start of the next lap with a green flag being waved at the start and finish line and the Yellow flags around the circuit being withdrawn. Overtaking before the start and finish line, however, is prohibited even if the car in front is a lapped car.
